National Wind’s Community-Based Development Services

From inception to operation, our development team is equipped to handle every step of the wind development process with ease and professionalism. This includes wind assessments, transmission studies, environmental work, permitting applications, or finding a financing, utility or construction partner.

National Wind’s community wind model allows for a uniquely effective development process. Our goal is to cultivate our relationships by actively giving the community a voice throughout the development process. This partnership defines our model and provides local ownership--it is what sets us apart from other developers.

Below is an outline of our development process in roughly chronological order. This process often times takes anywhere from two to five years to complete.

Our Development Process: A Community-Based Approach

  1. A group of landowners interested in developing a wind project contact National Wind.
  2. Should the initial review prove positive, we conduct a feasibility study.
  3. If the feasibility results are positive, the landowners and National Wind proceed to capitalize and form a limited liability company. National Wind operates as the project’s managing partner.
  4. A local advisory board is elected from a project’s founding members.
  5. Our in-house wind analysis team installs an on-site meteorological tower to collect and measure wind data.
  6. Local field specialists are hired to sign wind easements (leases), gaining local participation in the project.
  7. A local project office is opened, staffed by our field specialists.
  8. We work through the transmission study process, ultimately signing an interconnection agreement.
  9. A Power purchaser-likely a utility-is selected.
  10. Onsite environmental studies are conducted.
  11. Wind turbines are acquired.
  12. A final wind turbine layout is designed.
  13. The necessary permits are acquired.
  14. Wind farm construction and operation occur.
